I remember it like it was yesterday! That storm was one for the record books, and it is unforgettable for me! Partly because it was on Christmas Eve. The temperature dropped like a rock to about 18 degrees during the storm and the winds were gusting over Hurricane force at times toward the end of the storm! The temperature, the wind, and the fact that it was a very dry snow, all combined to completely change the landscape! Drifts to around 12 ft made the landscape outside look like you were in anther world! At the end of the storm the winds got very strong out of the northwest. I was 8 years old, and I was so amazed at how the landscape was changed , I just had to go outside to check this new world out! My dad wouldnt let us go outside when I asked him and I knew someone (we had 5 kids at the time) would see me if I I went out one of the doors. So looked for another way out to check this new world out. We had a window that you could go out onto a flat roof over my brothers room. So, I went out the window and walked over the flat roof to the edge of the roof. There was a 10 foot drift right next to the roof that came up to exactly the top of the roof. I only had to jump 2 feet to get onto the drift, and I decided to jump! Well that was a dumb kid thing to do! I backed up and ran and jumped about 8 feet out into the middle of the drift. I sank down to almost the bottom of the drift and couldnt move because the snow was like cement around me! Very quickly I started to panic when I realized I couldnt move and the snow was pilling on top of me because of the incredible wind! Thankfully, I was missed by my family inside the house and they started to look for me in the 20 room mansion we lived in on Britons Bridge Rd. My dad saw my tracks on the roof top while looking out the window and he walked out and saw where I was. He came out and dug me out of the drift. I was lucky that they looked for me as quickly as they did because I was close to being smothered by the snow coming into the hole I made in the drift. We had our Christmas vacation extended by a week because it took that long for them to get through all the amazing drifts! I was told that 926 was the worst drifted road and it took them 2 weeks to get it cleared! Needless to say, I will always remember that storm!!!
