I remember it like yesterday, I had approached Rajni Kothari to be one of the recipients of the first copy of the first citizens report on governance and development. He accepted the invitation. He was very unwell and asthmatic. He demanded an advance copy. On the appointed date, it was my responsibility to pick him up. He thrust a bunch of papers into my hand and said that I should deliver it to the Hindustan Times office as soon as the function was over. In the business of the day, I had forgotten about the papers - as we were supposed to meet the President immediately after the official release - followed by a dinner I was hosting. Next morning, the Hindustan Times had already carried the first of three parts of the bunch of papers that was sitting in my hands, which was a review of the report.
