I remember just like it was yesterday, much like everyone here. It had a life long affect on me as well. I was 17 and new to California and devastation of that magnitude. Out of all of my memories and feelings of this day the thing that stayed with me the longest was the profound sense of community. We had neighbors we had not met yet show up at our house with food. My mom handed out water to the brave rescue workers because we had a large supply of it. Never before and rarely since had I seen that kind of coming together. It motivated me to start volunteering for the Red Cross and other organizations that help the community as a whole. I taught all my children to volunteer and they all know it started with this day for our family.
