I remember like it was last week the day the Berlin wall finally came down 25 years ago. I was in the Army stationed in Germany and was out on a hike in the forest when I heard the news. It was a huge monumental event for us, because, I think it signaled the end of the Cold War. We grew up pretty terrified that some day wed see hordes of Russian soldiers invading Europe and it would eventually lead to nuclear war. And we had spent years studying how to defeat the Soviet military, even staking out particular buildings and hills in Germany where we would defend the onslaught. So when the wall came down it was like there was suddenly hope that the world could move on and focus on more positive things.
