I remember once there was a little boy who lived on the busy streets of a city. One day he happened to look longingly through the window of a shoe shop. Men and women walked past as if in a hurry, some even brushed the boy aside for standing in their way. As the boy looked into the shop, a woman on the inside of the shop asked him,” What is it young lad? Why are you looking so sadly inside the window? Are you looking for someone?” The boy replied “I don’t have anyone. I was asking God to give me a pair of shoes.” The woman came out of the store and took the boy inside. She asked the clerk to get some warm water and a pair of socks. She washed the tender yet dirty feet of the boy and put on a pair of socks. She then tried on a couple of shoes to see which one fit and then chose a nice pair of brown shoes that was just right for him. Although nobody noticed the boy when he was standing by the window, many saw him walk out wearing a clean new pair of shoes. As he was leaving he held the woman’s hands and asked “Are you God’s wife?” It is very easy for us to sympathize when we come across needy people. We simply say “Oh poor girl, wish she had good clothes to wear” or “How sad it is to see the boy seeking alms when he’s supposed to be in school”, and move on. We should stop and see how we can help these people. How tough is it to give away a packet of cookies, a used towel or blanket, a used dress or scarf? Instead of simply wishing let us stretch our arms to help them with what they want. This is charity in its true sense!
