I remember sitting on the couch in the living room, in Reseda, in my seventeenth year. In the middle of my punk rock rebellion; rebelling against everything. I was a regular Johnny Strabler, “What are you rebelling against, Mike?” “What do you got?” That afternoon my mom decided to drop an allegory on me. She says to me, “With you and your brother, it’s like walking two dogs. Your brother is the happy, excited dog that loves the walk and is excited to go forward. Whereas you are the dog that is constantly tugging on the leash and trying to walk in the opposite direction of where we’re headed. The whole walk ends up being a struggle.” I don’t believe I stayed and discussed this. I probably mumbled, “I’m a dog?” and then got up and left the room. Now, years later, as I look back on this, I’m sure it was intended (in some way, shape or form) to motivate me to be the happy-go-lucky dog that loves the walk. I took it as a criticism and rebelled harder. Not sure if I ever stopped rebelling. Though I do try hard to understand when my kids go through their rebelling (not always great at it) and never tell them they’re dogs. #michaelessington #lifewontwait
