I remember the days at Central State School when we had a huge gathering of families for sports days and the big break-up day at the end of the year. We played games and got a piece of watermelon. Mums used to cook for the tuckshop and those who couldn;t cook used to donate the ingredients for others to do so. We had milk delivered in bottles for all school students, and only the well off people had anything other than jam sandwiched for lunch. We played skipping, elastic, and learnt to do somersaults on thin mattresses. We played basketball in a cement dam thing with a bitumen bottom. We jumped our high jump onto sawdust to break the fall and ran sprints with a rope for the finish line. AT the end of the year, you got a clap from the class for coming first in grade or having full attendance. I started school with a slate to write on, and in grade 6 I met my best friend. We are still friends 44 years later. Oh the memories attached to that school.....
