I remember the first conversation with my first surgeon. He didnt want to give me any odds, not even ballpark. I persisted. Surely, some round the block kinda general I understand the where-to-fors and the what-nots wont quote you dont worry nosir not me? No. But, he said in a kind of accusatorial tone, youve got the best chances of anyone Ive spoken to today. Oh? I do? Lucky me? Heh heh. I mean, Im sorry about your day and all... So. Somehow by the end of that day I had made some gratuitous assumptions, some Spock-like analyses, some divining, and decided that I had about 1.5 times better chance than the folks around me, on average. I felt guilty but pretty happy also. One and a half times and I took it as a virtual life sentence! Yay! One and a half times as much. And it meant everything to me. A young black man is 21 times as likely to be killed by a cop as his white counterpart, on average. True.
