I remember the first time I discovered Kerli. I was on my second - TopicsExpress

I remember the first time I discovered Kerli. I was on my second tour in Iraq (a 16 month tour/extended visit during The Surge). Her CD was on sale in the little shop on the Forward Operating Base I was assigned to (Taji, near Baghdad). Internet connections sucked, so no one could really download music or listen to the new stuff coming out back home. A lot of times the CDs available to use were very random. I bought her album Love Is Dead because I thought the cover art was awesome. I had no idea what was on the CD and I never heard of her. As I listened to her songs, I knew right away she was Eastern European. I could hear the accent clearly even in her singing voice. Half my family is from there (Russia and Czech Republic), so it is easy for me to pick out. This actually made me appreciate her music even more and sure enough, in the song Creepshow, she is singing about Estonia. This made so much more sense to me then why her CD was randomly for sale in the shop there too. Because, on base with us, as a part of the coalition forces were Estonian troops. (On our FOB we also had Macedonians, Australians, and a few British Air Force guys.) I am glad I decided to by this CD and I actually quite like her. I looked her up a read that she was creating a new spin on Goth music, calling it Bubble Goth. How cute is that?! From Wiki: After the release of Love Is Dead, Kerli was labeled as goth and a disagreeing critic said she was more along the lines of bubblegum goth. Kerli stated thats exactly what I am and that she was going to take this concept and roll with it and she created the derivative BubbleGoth. Described by Kerli, BubbleGoth is putting together light and dark, opposites, and things that you dont really necessarily think go together. Anyway, she is very beautiful, interesting, has a nice sound to her voice and great style. And from one Eastern European girl to another, its nice to hear a sister artist. Just thought to share.
