I remember the good old days when we were a one-day side to be reckoned with. We would win the first 3 matches of a 5 match series and then EXPERIMENT with the last 2 games to give the other people in the squad game time and experience. This way you : 1.KNEW, what your best 11 was 2.KNEW, what your batting line up SHOULD be. 3.KNEW what your best bowling line up was. 4.Made sure everyone KNEW their roles in the Team. 5.Won the series without problem. 6.GREW your DEPTH as a Squad. 7.Gave confidence to the Incumbents, but put them on their toes as the other guys also got opportunities to shine and push for your place. 7.Built a formidable team that was always a favorite at world cups. But come knockout games and crunch time, we tinker with the formula. Leave out key players, rest this one and that one in a quarter final. Play horses for courses instead of the best players. Send someone in at nr 3 to pinch hit, or block until the 30th over, messing up the entire batting line up. Try different bowlers at the death, because we bowled out our normal death bowlers. Can somebody please tell me WHY we need to look at the combinations in a game of cricket. F.F.S this is a team sport yes, but a team sport in which INDIVIDUALS shine on the day. Not like rugby where you look at your center pair or loose forward trio how actually have to work together.! Potentially 1 Guy in a T20 wins you the game, i.e. A great spell of bowling Destructive hitting Great catch or run out. NOT how well those guys run between the wickets together!Thats cricket basics. What do you look for in a good T20 player. 1.Strike rate. That goes for bowlers and batsmen as well. How fast can you get runs, or how quickly can you get someone out. Run rate are also important, but whats better, bowling 2 dot balls and THEN get smashed for six, or going for 2 boundaries and then getting him out?
