I remember this old marker on the Swiss-French border from my youth, when I lived nearby. It dates from 1818, post-Napoleon, so the French side bears the fleur de lys of the Bourbons, not the N of the Empire. The other side bears a G for Geneva, still more aware of herself as a city-state and republic than as a Swiss canton. In the woods hereabouts there are, or were, foxes and owls. An enchanted place. But its not all historical and bucolic: two miles away is Geneva International Airport, and directly underfoot runs CERNs Large Hadron Collider, wherein the Higgs Boson was detected.
