I remember using these when I was still at uni... they had machines where you place books inside the scanning area and it would automatically check out all the books in one go rather than scanning them one by one. Im sure if they built a larger scanning bay area, this system could easily be tailored to checking out of food/groceries with the potential for an all-in-one-go scan, in some future fully-automated supermarket, without all the annoying delays and errors of existing self-service checkout systems, thus saving much time and incoveniences. In an even more advanced society, where money would hypothetically be non-existent, technically it may be possible to just build in the scanners into the shelf spaces, so when a human takes an item from the shelf, the system instantly registers this and updates the entire network database, to highlight the availability of present inventory, and ensures it makes the decision to automatically refill the shelves when inventory on the shelves are running low.
