I remember walking home from school, fully equipped with a bag - TopicsExpress

I remember walking home from school, fully equipped with a bag full of state sponsored text-books and walking past a garden where an african boy, younger than me, was helping his father manicure someones garden. I remember how embarrassed I felt. I remember, while doing my national service, when bus discrimination was abolished, sometimes having to travel on my local bus service in my combats and boarding the african bus with a really good feeling and smiling as nicely as I could to avoid the alarm of a soldier boarding the bus and getting broad friendly grins in return. I remember how hopeful that felt. I remember the fear of carnage and civil war slowly evaporate as Nelson Mandela introduced himself to us after his release. Happy Birthday Madiba. Thank you.
