I remember well, as a BYU music major, the culture of superiority, and the idea that circulated there, that all contemporary LDS music is embarrassingly juvenile. I got sucked into that culture for a bit. Then my time as a songwriter of LDS music gave me some added insight and respect for the art of sharing important messages in simple, memorable ways, and how hard it can be to do. I still dont love all contemporary Mormon music, because, more than ever, thats a huge blanket genre, but Im proud to say that Im amazed by Janice Kapp Perry. I wish I knew her personally. I think she deserves some respect, and I appreciate this blog post. My current calling in church is as a piano accompanist for the children in primary, and I agree with this writer, that the primary songs are the best songs we Mormons have.
