I remembered what policeman said to the traveler at the station that the ‘Guwahati Express will be jam-packed with the migrant labor workers from the east’. Although I am well aware about the inflow of this work force to our state, I never guessed how huge it is. In fact most of the bogies were occupied by them. They enjoyed our small state as a potential Gulf. As the train left the platform, a guy standing very close facing me, wearing dingy dresses smiled at me and said in his broken Hindi that he is going to Assam. Inhaling the stinky smell coming from the nearby half-opened toilet, I smiled at him and said, ‘I am going to Bhubaneswar’. He pulled out his lower lips and put the hand crushed ‘Chewing Paan’ there and smiled back at me offering his Paan. I simply smiled looking at that Paan and he was good enough to withdraw his friendly offer with a cool smile... Gopakumar Radhakrishnan
