I restored a basement carpet today that had mushrooms (aka, Peziza Domiciliana fungus) growing in one of the corners. The problem could either be a foundation leak, but more likely in this situation a humidity problem and no air circulation in this particular area of the basement. Often times in the summer our basements can get extremely humid. After 72 hours of above 70% relative humidity microbial growth can start. Often people buy a humidifier and just because they are bailing out gallons of water a day, does not mean youre maintaining below a 70% relative humidity level. Its important to gauge the humidity level to insure you are dropping it. Im always available to answer any questions about damp basements and also can kill any mold, mildew or funguss, then clean and sanitize your carpet.
