I run because I love to run. I view it as the ultimate homage to our ancestors who had to run for survival. They say Im a militant runner. Whatever that means. Maybe its because i don’t practice or understand running principles and training techniques. Ask me about fartlek, tempo & intervals, and it’s “deer-headlights” time. Which is why when I run, I never call it training. I call it indulging or having fun. But, that’s just me. It’s all about getting lost in time and getting “lost” in the trails, and in the process, the runner’s soul gets fed. Running is not a social activity for me. I mostly run by myself, whenever I can, wherever I can and for however long my available time would allow me. I do have to work and of course, I have my number one priority which is my family. There is, however, a strong connection between my running and my family. Everytime I run, I feel like I get farther away from the man I used to be, and closer to the man that my family deserves. I’m not a competitor though. I view myself as a “distance-running enthusiast”. However, I have joined five organized races in the last three years, as an external validation that indeed, I can run long distances. I’ve logged a several thousand miles over the last few years, but I only have five finisher’s medals. 26.2 miles, 50k, 50 miles, 100k and 100 miles. Not bad for someone who just five years ago, was a 280-lb, sedentary, arthritic, pre-diabetic, high-cholesterol, hypertensive, tachycardic, drink-til-blackout, heavy smoker.
