“I run in the path of Your commands, for You have set my heart free” (Psalm 119:32). The grass is always greener on the other side...right? In general, asian parents are known to be extremely strict. My father, however, has always been one to march to the beat of his own drum. I was raised in a home absent of the traditional rules and boundaries parents normally set for their children. Most kids might envy that kind of upbringing. But as far as I was concerned, those kids were the lucky ones. If parents do not set appropriate boundaries for their children, they will eventually discover their own, but the chances of them being healthy ones are slim. As was the case with me. I love my father. In all of his brokenness, I know he did his best. But what he failed to consider was the negative ramifications of his “hands-off” parenting approach. He wanted to believe that the less restrictions he put on us, the greater the opportunity my siblings and I had to become the best versions of ourselves. A beautiful theory, but no where near true. For me personally, it created a paralyzing insecurity because I never knew where the safe zone ended and the war zone began. Considering all of this, could we see that God’s laws for us are actually for our freedom?󾌸
