I rush to inform about McDonalds Restaurant being build at the outskirts of Oświęcim/Auschwitz. To preempt the future catchy articles and headlines about “McDonald in Auschwitz” or “McDonaldization of Auschwitz “ which may build up another conflict about the site of memory I rush to clarify the investment is some 2 km from the gates of both Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II Birkenau, very close to the well established KFC. For those of You for whom it will become an agitating event worth of contempt and taking preventive actions or at least expressing superior version of historical disgust I advise to spend this time and energy on studding and trying to prevent the events in Syria, Eastern Ukraine, Southern Sudan or some parts of India. Humanity and its thought are much more needed in those parts of the world then at McDonalds in Oświęcim. From my experience I can only guess that the most fervent opponents of this new establishment will be making the very first and enthusiastic clients. We have learned through the last 70 years how to talk and narrate the genocide, how to commemorate it , how to educate it, how to use it for the needs of modern politics, how to fight over the sites of memory unfortunately we have failed to learn the most important lesson on how to prevent it from happening again and again on our planet. This lesson is still to be learned better sooner then latter for our own sake as humanity and individuals.
