I said, I will not make mention of Him nor speak anymore in His name, but His word was in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones. I was weary of holding it back, & I could not. (Jeremiah 20:9) Sunday night is known as resignation night among some ministers or clergymen. Though I have never inflicted criticism on a minister concerning any message delivered at anytime, period. The thought of such behavior is appalling to me. However, I have knowledge that this does take place from members, visiters, saints and/or sinners. Thus the term: resignation night. Though I do feel sympathy with discouraged servants of God. That is not a new, alarming, or unexpected condition. In wisdom, one could realize that the heat of this reaction would be tempered after a nights sleep. Certainly cooler heads will prevail. This was the predicament in which Jeremiah found himself. He had the Word of the Lord in his heart. He was sent to a people who did not want to hear his warnings, reproofs & rebukes. Of course they already had their own prophets who were telling the people lies & assuring them with a false sense of security. Jeremiah faced ridicule, scorn & mockery. In v. 7 (TEV) He states, Everyone makes fun of me, they laugh at me all day long. In v. 8 (Gods Word) he states, They have made me the object of insults & contempt all day long. In v. 9a (NKJ) Then I said, I will not make mention of Him, nor speak anymore in His Name. The Word of God within him became a burning & churning fire shut up in His bones. He tried to stop prophesying but could not. Like Paul who stated, Necessity is laid upon me, woe is me if I do not preach the Gospel (1Cor. 9:16). Paul could not quit; Jeremiah could not quit. You cannot quit, either. There is too much gain by keeping on keeping on. But His Word was in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones; I was weary of holding it back, & I could not. (Jer. 20:9b)
