I said about a year ago that Better Together had to up its game and that the Labour Party would be best to extricate itself from this alliance and make its own case for opposing separation based upon working class solidarity or risk snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. In the twelve months that have since passed nothing has changed. The campaign has continued in the same uninspiring, monotonous, complacent, lethargic, unimaginative vein and as we move into the home straight the momentum is undoubtedly with the Yes side. I have considerable experience in elections spanning a 30 year period and what I have seen in the last week has been frankly astounding. People have been signing up to register to vote - many of them probably for the first time in their lives - in phenomenal numbers. My experience has helped me pick up vibes and I make an educated guess that the vast majority are Yes voters. I have been observing the comings and goings at the Dundee Electoral Registration office during my lunch and it has been very busy but today it was going like the proverbial fair! I stand by my main reasons for voting no. It would leave our comrades elsewhere in the Uk considerably weaker and I remain convinced that an independent Scotland would be forced to sign up to the Euro as a condition of EU membership. I appeal to the Scottish Labour Party in particular. Get it together whilst it is still within your power. Time and opportunity is fast slipping away.
