I sailed on 2 Spruance Class Destroyers, DD 969 and DD 972, 1980-1987. These ships lived a long and glorious life. I do not feel the Spruances lives were cut that short. From an engineering standpoint 25-30 is a long time. I am glad that both of mine were sunk. It was a more dignified to leave the fleet. For those of us that were around when these ships were new the hardest part is believing that we are getting that old. GSMC(SW)
