I saved up all my Rick-Bucks to buy admission to this, a loving tribute to the Toho films I grew up watching in the early-1980s. The human parts are totally perfunctory, which is why reviews have been so polarizing, but Gareth Edwards TOTALLY KNOCKS IT OUT OF THE PARK with his monster sequences. Its too bad they would ever make a big-budget film with just monsters (and a few humans to yell out expository dialogue), so we have to slog through some shenanigans to give the director what he really wants -- giant players on an exquisite game board. Seriously, there are combat sequences I could have never imagined seeing, a tribute to an imagination which saves this from becoming Pacific Rim or Cloverfield (i.e. other giant monster movies that missed the point).
