I saw ALS first hand working at University of Maryland Speciality - TopicsExpress

I saw ALS first hand working at University of Maryland Speciality Hospital. I had 5 patients with ALS on an 80 bed vent unit at one time. It made me question how there could possibly be a merciful god. I cooked and fed pancakes for one and bought and fed cheeseburgers to another. It was one of their last meals before speech therapy determined they could no longer swallow without aspirating (flooding their lungs). I then wrote their tube feeding orders. I documented as one affected woman used a pointer in her mouth and an alphabet board to point out each letter explaining the abuse she encountered by patient care technicians. Because she couldnt talk, they assumed she couldnt hear them mocking her for soiling herself in bed. One of my greatest idols, Stephen Hawking, suffers from this horrific disease. ALS is despicable. Its broken my heart more than once. I have donated, but I cannot pour ice water over my head. It just seems to miss the point for me. I am so happy that awareness has been raised. This is such a tricky disease. Its genetic. Finding a cure will take an incredible amount of research money. Be generous and be grateful ❤️
