I saw I That time of the week when I am going to be - TopicsExpress

I saw I That time of the week when I am going to be misunderstood again..but its fun to be Mr.Misunderstood. So here it is - When I was 15 and when I saw Indian, I was blown over. To the extent that I dressed up as the old Kamal in the fancy dress competition at school that year. That movie was so entertaining. And then I grew older, saw loads of films, got corrupt, and then I started laughing at some of the other works of the same director. And now I have grown a lot more older, got patient, and now I see his films with a big open mind... just to applaud his love for Make it large Like my other write ups about movies, I wont get into the story and stuff. I loved the EFFORT and the amount of time and money that has gone into making it. Phew... its really brilliant that this man can have so much passion and enthusiasm about such BIG things time and again. In a line... its a good watch... except that in the first half, the china episode had to be somehow squeezed in a bit... it seemed too long. But the second half keeps you interested with new things showing up every few mins. Some of the fight sequences, just a lil shorter would have made it super special and real. When we see the hunch back guy getting beaten over n over for so long... it starts shattering the illusion. Dependency - that is what I love about Shankars films. He as the captain of the project knows how to delegate work, share his vision and get the output from a huge team of talents. I guess working on a Shankar film pushes every dept to perform to max potential. It must be a dream for a costume designer and the make up artist to be on a Shankar film... he gives them so much space to show their talents. Of course the Art Dept always excels in his films. I loved the Costume Depts contribution... brilliant work. Especially the song where objects transform into Amy and her clothes represent the object she transformed from. There is so much thought in that lil work. The entire song I was only looking at how they will do the next one. The Ads were brilliant.. its fun.. after a point everyone wants to guess what product it could be about! I actually liked the BEAST song as well.. there is such attention to detail, the concept was really good... I dint think it was forced at all. On the whole... except for the lil slow screenplay (in the first half, easily forgivable) I loved the excellence shown by each dept - acting, cinematography, graphics, costume, music, makeup etc etc.. In my last write up about PK, and this one... I have a point to make. Shankars film could be just a love story, over the top stuff etc etc.. and PK was all about questioning religious practices etc.. As a filmmaker, what I could see was how both were Most expected films, both knew the huge business potential they had... they knew they were going to make pots of gold. Shankar used that... he pushed every dept to work to the max and give realistic output... u could see cinematic magic. But I feel somewhere PK team felt This is enough to convey the point, they didnt push to achieve excellence in other streams of filmmaking... an example would be the train blast... wasnt it terrible graphics? When you know you are going to earn 300cr and more, why not give a believable output... especially when it is available... just buy it. Shankar never does that, I dont think he ever compromises on the final look of the film ... do you guys agree? For me getting that perfection is so important, it doesnt matter whether the audience can see it... but as an artist practicing that art... its important for me. When I see snippets of my earlier films, I can only see those stupid mistakes, my eyes directly go there... eg.. in Mayavvi song from Lifeu Ishtene , there is a jimmy shot where the camera dolly up for a top angle, and I can see a plastic cup on the floor at the edge. Some crew must have had coffee and thrown it there... and 4 years have passed but I cant NOT see tht cup. It pisses me off even today. I know... it sounds crazy. Going back to that topic... post inception, Nolan could have shot a film in one room and the entire world would have still seen it and given him billions of dollars. Hed be the richest man probably after that. But he pushed it with interstellar... spent more... he knew the potential of the returns and used it all up, giving you an experience like never before. Thats what I feel master filmmakers of our country should do... we cant to do yet... we are too small.. but they can and they should make good use of that power they have.
