I saw a Japanese hornet once when I lived in Tokyo. It flew down and alighted on the bench I was sitting on. It was enormous. It actually looked like a clockwork toy; I couldnt quite comprehend it was alive. I also had a wasp bore into the back of my calf as a young teen on a visit to a local cave complex - it was excruciating and the only reason, aside from hectic thrashing, that the winged devil let go, I believe, was that the area had only twenty minutes before been dosed in insect repellant. It was only a fraction the size of those Asian hornets. Death from one must truly be excruciating!!
