I saw a car tag from Union county Mississippi yesterday, and it - TopicsExpress

I saw a car tag from Union county Mississippi yesterday, and it made me think about the names of towns and counties in Mississippi. As I gave it deeper thought, it occurred to me that there are some interesting factoids in play. I suppose that with the distance between places back when they were settled, and the lack of communication back then, it should be no surprise that things like this happened. For instance..... Clarksdale is not in Clarke county. Forest, not in Forrest county. Greenville, nor Greenwood, are in Greene county. The capital Jackson, not in Jackson county. Pearl, not in Pearl River county. Jonestown, not in Jones county. Leesburg, not in Lee county. Smithville, not in Smith county. Surely Quitman is in Quitman county....Nope. Leaksville isnt in Leake county. Prestiss, no place near Prentiss county. Marion in Marion county...No. Desoto, not in Desoto county. You would think Georgetown would be in George county. Wrong. And, as I mentioned earlier, Union isnt in Union county. But hey, kudos to Yazoo City, Waynesboro, Madison, Newton, Grenada, Ponotoc, and Calhoun City. They remained true to their counties namesakes. And no......I dont have a lot to do!!!!!
