I saw a comment saying that one reason to use a certain aversive was for handicapped people and since I fall into the category you may think I would need one I want to dispel that myth. I am a single parent with sole responsibility for a 30kg labrador and a 50 kg adolescent ridgeback. That makes 80kg of dog in one hand, plenty to drag a powerchair off course if they decided. I also have very little spinal integrity, indeed have just had 2 days where I cant even use my reclined powerchair, I also have pretty active MS and several other debilitating conditions. I use a front attaching harness and my dogs do not pull, it is as simple as that, if they get out of position I stop, everyone knows what they should do. Admittedly they do not arrive knowing how to behave and without training they would be a nightmare. positive reinforcement is not permissive, my dogs have to behave appropriately around me but they are taught that without shouting, pulling or causing pain or fear of any kind. Anyway I just wanted to say do not let physical weakness lead to encouraging training methods that put dogs under stress, thus making them less safe positive beings.
