I saw a devastating film at the Brecht Forum in Manhattan last night on the state of the prison system in the U.S. It is called Broken on Every Side, and includes long passages of commentary from Michele Alexander (The New Jim Crow author), juxtaposed with photos of the current state of prisons, the overcrowding, the statistics on increase in incarceration in the last 20 years, prison overcrowding, and horrifying stats about the use of solitary confinement on those as young as six years of age. This is a grass roots film, not distributed but taken from group to group by members of a coalition including the American Friends Service Committee, to reveal the true state of affairs in the U.S. Reflection upon this reality juxtaposed with the commemoration of the March on Washington =Cognitive dissonance.
