I saw a post on a forum the other day. It was a first time Mother asking for advise on getting through the next few weeks, healing after birth, and anything anyone could offer on raising her new baby. I sat back and thought, what could I possibly offer, at 29? This morning, I had a quiet moment to myself. This is what I can offer -- Love them. Love them with all you have - and make sure they know. Talk to them. Especially when they dont understand, and keep on talking when they do. When they can talk, ask them about their day, and LISTEN. Communicate. Support them, through all the happy moments in life - and encourage them through disappointments. Teach them good morals - and set the same example. Never lie, never cheat and never steal. Get them involved, and keep your self involved. Nurture healthy relationships. SpOrTs are an excellent avenue to get they out there to make friends - encourage that! Give them everything you never had -- BUT teach them the value of a dollar, always work for what you have. Dont take the easy road. Let them make mistakes, as long as it wont hurt them. Eat dinner. Together ALWAYS! No cell phones, or IPods at the table. TALK! Ask about the day -- and get better answers than it was ok. What was their favorite part of the day? What made them happy today? Be consistent, then they know what is expected. But love them, always love them. Hug them every day. Tell them you love them - not out of habit, but because you do. Everything you need to know to raise your babies, they will teach you. LiSten. Have Fun. sMiLe. Cleaning will wait, it will still be there later. Spend Time, as much TiMe as you possibly can, it goes FaSt!! Answer their life questions truthfully, dont shelter them. Reason with them, even when they dont understand, someday they will. Thats what my 29 year old self knows about child rearing. I might not have it perfect, but I think thats a pretty good start.
