I saw a question about a muzzle earlier. Whenever it see anything - TopicsExpress

I saw a question about a muzzle earlier. Whenever it see anything about the use of the muzzle there are usually a few who think it is a bad thing. I may be preaching to the choir here. At least I hope I am. I have come to see a muzzle as a tool. When I first thought about muzzling my fear reactive Dane who has never bitten, but weighs 158lbs. I was embarrassed, ashamed that she was not acting the gentle giant way. I blamed myself for not being good enough at training her. For not keeping her safe from the a------ trainer who punched my Deaf and visually imparted Dane who was squirmy after trying on a harness for the first time. I tentatively brought up a muzzle to my girls behavioural specialist as well as one of the support people at the rescue we adopted her from. They both where fantastic. They educated me as to the muzzle as a tool and a protection device for my girl. I would love to see the negative stigma attached to the muzzle as a bad dog, or bad owner change. I will use a muzzle on my girl for her own protection. I love her and want to be able to train her in a way that takes the edge off of me. At the same time want to warn anyone considering a muzzle. They are not a babysitter and should never be used unsupervised. Thank you to all the knowledgable, responsible people who support muzzle use where appropriate. Is there anything that can be done to change the negative stigma of a muzzle? Maybe if it was seen as a tool by the general public more people would use them.
