I saw a tee shirt that reads “WHERE IN THE HELL IS TORTILLA FLAT”? Turns out that it’s a four-building town about one hours drive up Apache Trail (St. Rt. 88). Established as a stage station in 1904. The town has not grown as today’s population is only six. It consist of a mercantile store, museum (former one room school), restaurant and ice-cream shop. It is estimated that 80,000 one dollar bills are stapled to the restaurant walls. The restaurant was once a bar and workers at Roosevelt Dam would staple a dollar with their name written on it to insure that they could stop and get a cold beer in hard times. Today’s tourist don’t get a beer but they write a message on their dollar and leave a memory . The Restaurant walls are totally covered and now they are putting the bills on the ice-cream shop walls. I should go, it’s the only way I’m going to see $80,000.
