I saw bits of 1998s Godzilla, the one with, you remember, Matthew Broderick? Like some kind of romcom with a monster hidden in it somewhere? Truly odd. And I wasnt really watching it, but had it on in the background, when I heard the line ...using Manhattan as Ground Zero which, to be honest, and with the anniversary coming up tomorrow, just really popped out at me. We say, people say, that Gojira initially stepped out of the Japanese unconscious as a towering symbol of the atomic bombs that devastated two cities on that island nation. The U.S. Godzilla somehow manages to PREFIGURE the devastation of 9/11... Shots of the Chrysler Building going down and the MetLife building torn a new one... I remember, after a full day of watching four or five networks simultaneously covering and re-replaying the footage of those events -in order to rest my troubled soul- sneaking into an empty theater to catch the dollar show of Steven Spielbergs AI. In that film, Manhattan represents a worldwide collapse: the Atlantic has swallowed it, whole. But there stand those two towers, still.
