I saw this is one of my dispatcher groups and thought it was very interesting and heartwarming. -Sarah Tom Lange: In many rural communities before 911, phone lines to the fire dept ran into private residences, usually homes of the volunteer firemen. The wives would pick up the fire phone while the husbands would head for the firehouse. To notify other firemen these houses had a button to set off the sirens in town. Growing up my house was one of those. We all knew the FD ring and knew only mom answered that and get out of dads way. We were also scared to death to touch the button that set off the sirens. Years later when 911 was bought in the fire phones were no more and the volunteer fire fighters were dispatched by pagers. Today I follow my moms footsteps being a dispatcher for 12 years now and my dads being a volunteer fireman for 20 years. I guess I followed both of their leads.
