I saw this on my Twitter feed--a photo of Chef Thomas Keller and me, with the header Who is the Bay Areas Top Cultural Icon? What?! It was like discovering I was running for homecoming queen and having no ball gown at the ready in case I did win. If you go to the website, you will see there are actually many other people listed--Boz Scaggs, Isabel Allende, Armistead Maupin, Michael Tilson Thomas, and more. Not included on the list: Steve Jobs. How can that be? I was going to make him a write-in candidate, but then I remembered that this relates to culture. However, after a few more seconds of thinking, I revised myself yet again when I realized that Steve Jobs has done much in altering how we receive and interact with culture. You can vote for Steve Jobs and my feelings will not be hurt. I will, too, unless Chef Keller gives me a reservation at French Laundry sooner than a year in advance.
