I saw with sadness this morning the photo of a caisson on a soldier killed by friendly fire. Friendly indeed. When will it ever dawn on the planners of wars that wars are filled with tragedy from one end to the other. Somehow the warmaking narrative always assumes that wars will all be like World War II, a global contest of good versus evil. And even that is woefully simplistic. Not once in my lifetime (I was born in 1945) have I seen a war that did not have unintended consequences. That is not to say that war is never justified. But it is to say that I would much rather give no cent to senseless, deliberately manufactured, wars that always lower morals and leave the world worse off than it previously was, than to pay for lifegiving and life sustaining efforts, no matter how fragile or partial.
