I see a lot of authors get confused about book marketing and publicity, so over the next week or two, I want to clarify a few points. First up: marketing. Book marketing is anything you do for your book that increases its visibility and gets the word out, including creating collateral materials (postcards, bookmarks, and posters), digital media efforts (book trailers, YouTube campaigns, and webinars), building your social media, sending out promotional copies, doing book giveaways, taking out ads, doing paid promotions, and more. It involves effort, time, and resources--and it generally costs money.
