I see a lot of people saying that any attempt to reform the way we celebrate Diwali is part of some terrible sickular conspiracy, and saying that we should first protest against festivals that involve animal sacrifice, primarily hinting that we should be targetting Bakrid. The slaughter that takes place on that festival makes me sick, but since the hidden agenda here seems to be Islam bashing, Id like to point out a few things. More than 60% of Indians are meat eaters, and a substantial portion of Hindus also eat beef. India exports beef, and is one of the largest such exporters. We also supply most of the animals slaughtered in the hideous Gadhimai festival in Nepal - a Hindu festival. Owls are in demand to be sacrificed around Diwali time. Various other creatures still feature in festive sacrifices in the Hindu calendar, although this is illegal, like the rooster I rescued a few years back. I firmly believe that cultures and communities need to heal and reform from within. I am an agnostic, but I was born into a Hindu family and as much as I may reject its tenets, I still belong to the Hindu community in a broad cultural sense. Before ranting about how we need to fix Islams practices, if you really care about animal sacrifice, and arent just using it as a blind for your hatred of Islam and resentment towards any criticism of your own culture, why not focus on putting an end to animal sacrifice by Hindus, marginal though it might be? First hold your own people to the standards you want to impose on others. Or just STFU when people talk about having a cracker free Diwali and spending the money on something kind, and helpful and nice instead. It doesnt hurt anyone, and youre only making yourself look like a bigot with your derailing.
