I see numbers of posts, in response to questions posed by those new to N scale, about the various merits of manufacturers products. Bachmann being one of the manufacturers who are consistently bashed out-of-hand...with blanket statements as to quality, with little or no explanation. While its true, that Bachmann, being in the biz for quite some time, and being a heavy producer of toy train sets back in the day, has produced (and still does produce) items, locos and rolling stock, that have not kept up with the general trend toward smooth operation and fidelity of detail and scale, they have indeed produced (and are producing) N scale products that are every bit as detailed, and run every bit as smoothly, as the best of my favorite loco manufacturer, Kato. Some great examples are the many Spectrum steam examples released in the last 10 years, and some of the newer releases of rolling stock. I picked these up free (I cashed in my existing Ebay bucks) and ordered a couple of the new(ish) single dome tank cars. They arrived today and I have to say that these are every bit as well detailed and painted as any Micro Trains cars, have metal wheelsets, and, I do believe, actually ride at a more prototypical height than the MT cars. to my eye, the only bugaboo is the rather large (in comparison) Bachmann knuckle coupler (they couple well, and look the part-theyre just too large). Ill be replacing mine with MT Z scale couplers anyhow , so no worries for me there. Here are some pics of them-they were purchased to appear on the T-Trak modules, specifically to be switched at the bulk fuel oil dealer on the elevator module. Highly recommended!- Bruce Arbo
