I see people are still talking about the eagle plot hole in Lord of the Rings. Now someone, in a meme FB will not allow me to relocate, is claiming that when Gandalf said fly, you fools! in Moria, he actually meant go and hire yourselves a bunch of eagles. Sigh. Okay. Lets go through this one. More. Time. One. Eagles are a proud, dangerous and powerful race of beings--exactly the kind of person who should not be allowed within a hundred yards of the One Ring, incidentally--and are emphatically not anyones damn taxi service. They help when they want to. Two. Mordor has *really good* air defences. Also a great big eyeball with three hundred and sixty degrees of vision all the way to the horizon. Three. Professor Tolkien may have been many things, not necessarily all of them to his credit, but really, I dont think BLOODY STUPID was one of them. I suppose the persistence of this meme has to be laid partly at the door of Mr Jackson, but really, theres only so much you can get across even in a super-colossal trilogy of films. If people would just read the books and use their brains, maybe we wouldnt keep seeing this bobbing up again every few months because someones just thought of it for the first time in the history of literature. Sorry. Grump over.
