I see two trends today that may prevent us from understanding the Quran properly: 1. We read it thinking it applies to others: we should read every verse as if it applies to us. If we read an ayah talking about the Hell Fire, we should fear that we could be one of its inhabitants. If we read an ayah talking about hypocrisy or even kufr, we should fear that we could fall into it. Nowadays, we use these verses to pass judgments on others. How many times do we see, on social media, verses quoted to judge an individual or a group? Instead of using these verses to rectify our own selves, we now use it to threaten others, to intimidate others, to judge others, etc. In other words, we use the Quran for our self-promotion or self-piety. In contrast, the Companions, who exceeded everyone in sincerity, used to fear hypocrisy on themselves instead of hurling accusations around. 2. We read it with a preconceived understanding: Instead of reading the Quran with a clear (blank if you will) mind, and let it tell us what we need to do, we read the Quran with preconceived ideas and we tell it what it supposed to mean. So we force our understanding on the Quran. Hence, we dont benefit anything from the Quran. We dont learn anything from the Quran, because anything we might learn we think we know already. And now everyone got their own reading of the Quran. We have a political reading, a scientific reading, a modernist reading, an activist reading, an everything-Haram reading, an everything-Halal reading, a you-fill-in-the-blank reading. What about a servant reading of the Quran where you are the servant who is reading your Masters Book? What about your mind becoming a servant of Allah just as your body is a servant of Allah? We ask Allah to grant us some correct understanding of His Book, without any Hawaa (whim or desire) .. Aameen!
