I see your opposing views friends. I see division and polarization. I see extremism and harsh rhetoric that leads to marginalization, hurt feelings and bitterness on all sides. And thats cool. Its all part of the process that continues to define who and what we are... So I listen to all of you. I make an effort to understand your points of view whether I share in them or not... Except today. Today I choose to focus on the ties that bind us together. The shared sacrifice that makes us one. I think about the men and women who gave their lives to secure our freedom to disagree. I dont believe any of them were thinking about politics when the time came. Indeed, I suspect those who were able thought of family, friends and their own lives at homes far away one last time... So today I think about them. I think about the potential lost in return for the liberties gained. I think about those families, friends and the pain felt at losing loved ones far too soon. I think about the multi-generational impact and what it has cost each and every of us over the course of our history as a nation. I think all of that while realizing even our best efforts to repay the debt will fall short... Thats what Im thinking about today; that and what my best effort is. And what it should be.
