I seem to remember, not so long ago, that when Tom Cleverly burst onto the scene he was being talked about as the next Paul Scholes. When Cleverly got injured & was out for while his stock & expectations of him rose even further. Now he is seen, like James Millner, as a sort of anti-football footballer. Both Scholes & Millner are valued by their managers. So what is the problem? My own theory is that because there are so few English players in the EPL today they all have to, in fans minds, be special in some way. To me it highlights a problem that there are too few English players now who are actually good enough to do a job at the highest level. When I mean job I mean to a be all round team players. These sort of players stitch teams together & are not often noticed for the vital work they do. Both Millner & Cleverly are additionally sound team men. What we need is more of them not less & we wont produce enough of them until our coaching & coachs attitude to our young players changes. Often, it should be remembered, these players turn into craftsmen as they mature, like Xavi to name but one. dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2576465/Manchester-United-offer-Tom-Cleverley-new-15million-deal.html
