I sent this to Mr Morrison this morning. Why? Because I want him to know that people in Australia like it when he does things like this... I want him to do more things like this... I believe in giving credit where it is due, and what you have done in releasing the children from detention on the mainland is good. It is really good :) I am imagining the phone calls and happy shouts, laughter and tears… yes, it is a good thing. We need to get ALL the kids out. Nauru and Christmas Island are no place for kids, pregnant women… any innocent person! I know you have said that bringing them here would start up the people smugglers again, but what if you put the money saved from offshore detention (the most expensive kind) into the UNHCR in transit countries like Indonesia and Malaysia and Thailand. What if you used that money for a safe “bridge.” What if our message was not just “DON’T GET ON A BOAT!!!” but “don’t get on a boat… because we will come get you… we will bring you to Australia safely” What if we used the detention centres we have (the ones near civilization) as refugee camps, with open gates and visitors welcome anytime… make them like safe havens instead of jails… transit places. There are so many who need safety, it is a global issue and we can afford to do more than we do. I’m glad we are taking Christians from Iraq, and I’m glad the kids will be released… these are hopeful beginnings :) Thank you very much.
