I set up my bamacare account yesterday, and here are some actual FACTS: (1) It is affordable. Every case will be different because it is based on income and the level of coverage you choose. I was able to obtain insurance comparable to what I had under my previous employers group plan for roughly half the cost - and my 2014 AGI will be within a few hundred dollars of last years wages. If I had felt like playing Health Roulette and gambling on a catastrophic plan, my premium would have been $44 a month. That meme with the man on a park bench who is now forced to pay for something he couldnt afford in the first place? Why is that? Maybe he made unwise financial choices - like financing a car he really couldnt afford in the first place, but paid for it with money that should have responsibly gone to self care. (2) The insurance is provided by insurance companies, not directly from the Federal government (although single payer would be awesome). What this means is that I will not be turned away from a provider because I am using the ACA-mandated plans. All the health provider knows is the fact that I have insurance. I will have an insurance card just like every other person insured by my company of choice. The cards are not emblazoned with BENGHAZI in big red letters. (3) Because of the ACA, many people you know will not die because of uninsurability due to pre-existing conditions. Those of you who have children or grandchildren with asthma or other chronic conditions should rejoice at this fact alone. (4) Many people will find it easier to change jobs they may have held on to simply for the health insurance. Nothing kills the entrepreneurial spirit like the reality that an accident or unforeseen illness puts you or those you love in a life-or-death situation (worst case) or bankruptcy if you are uninsured. Most of us know people who are just holding onto that job until they can get Medicare. (5) This is not free healthcare. (They only do that in those lesser developed countries where quality of life matters to their governments.) People who are not paying now under the ACA either were already on some type of government insurance (such as CHIP or Medicaid) or were walking a tightrope where something simple could turn into something catastrophic because preventive care or early treatment was too cost prohibitive to take advantage of. (6) Those folks who are tired of paying for people too lazy to work? You are mad at the wrong people. If you made $50,000 last year, $38 of your annual tax burden was spent on social programs. On the other hand, $6000 of your total tax payment went to corporate welfare programs. Who benefited from the $38? Mostly children, grandma, or someone who hit a temporary setback. Who benefited from tax rebates, even though they posted profits for the tax year? General Electric ($380 million), General Motors ($370 million), Boeing ($264 million), Archer Daniels Midland ($174 million), and United Technologies ($160 million).
