I showed this brilliant poem today in my ELA class. Im teaching on Literacy Narratives this semester and the class discussion for today was about code-switching. While most of my students are Cape Verdean, I have one white student who is 20 years older than the rest of the class. She expressed that people in America should just speak in one language like she does. [facepalm] This is a perfect illustration of the #whiteprivilege that goes unchecked in many schools. Instead of honoring the hard work and genius it takes to navigate the complex social relationships her classmates encounter every day, she dismissed both their heritage and their struggle simultaneously. So, Im having her write an essay on the Melting Pot analogy and read an essay by Junot Díaz :) #teaching #TheMythOfColorblindness #codeswitching
