I signed, trying to prevent College of Charleston from cutting it swimming team. Dont I wish Title IX could be helpful here. Instead, a loophole allows schools to count one athlete three times for essentially doing the same activity, middle-distance running. While swimming has two seasons, indoor & outdoor and short course & long course, it is still one sport. Meanwhile, cross country, indoor, and outdoor track are considered three different sports. The loophole allows schools to provide girls and women with far fewer sports opportunities, like Duke. When the school was 80+ athletes shy of compliance, it only added one team, softball, and then started double and triple counting athletes in track and field. I dont have a problem with the practice if it is done for both men and women, but it is overwhelmingly only done on the womens side of the ledger, to prevent schools from being required to add more womens teams. Like if double, triple counting should be a ChampionWomen.org focus.
