I slept until 7:30 a.m. today because someone at some time went days without sleep. Ill eat a biscuit prepared in a hot oven because someone ate a dry fruit mix before I even rolled over. Ill scroll Facebook, pin some Pinterest ideas, write a few chapters of a book because someone crouched behind a tree or bellied down in the sand or flew in the heavens... For me. On Veterans Day, Im always reminded of one of the greatest honors of my life. I sat in the home of Gen. Hal Moore who led the inaugural battle of the Vietnam War. Guarded now by towering Magnolia trees instead of a frontline, Moore spends his days with memories of his late, beloved wife Julie and the whispers of his men. He recounted names and wounds as if he had just stepped off the battle field. Hed been approached numerous times about making his book, We Were Soldiers Once...And Young, into a movie, but he knew theyd never tell the story right. Hollywood got it wrong every damn time, he told me. A director finally approached him willing to listen, to tell the truth. According to Moore, Director Randall Wallace attended Ranger school at Ft. Benning and took the time to understand, as best as a civilian could, the horrors of war. When I expressed surprise that Moore became friends later in life with his Vietnamese counterpart, Gen. Giap, he told me politicians start war, men fight them. He had nothing but respect for Giap. Ill never forget one of his quotes as long as I live, Hate war. Love the American Warrior. To the American Warriors out there, thank you.
