I somehow missed this discovery back in June. Mindblowingly unique colony of organisms that looks like a lava lamp crossed with a feather boa! Discovered at a depth of around 1,600 m off the coast of Monterey, California. Its a siphonophore - a colony of individual animals (called zooids). Siphonophores are relatives of the jellyfish with the most infamous one being the Portuguese Man o War.
