I sometimes question myself. Is what Im doing really tango? Yes, Im dancing. Yes, it is to tango music. Yes, Im using tango figures (or, at least what my teachers have taught me are tango figures). But Ive sometimes heard that just dancing tango figures to tango music isnt enough. I think Im listening to the music and responding to it as best I can, but I know of musicians whove gone to BsAs and been told they had no musicality. I havent spent much time in BsAs, and neither have most of my partners. Im trying my best to do what I think my teachers are suggesting, but still I doubt. How good is the provenance of my tango? Are there things Im doing badly or wrong because they seemed to obvious to my teachers to mention? There are certainly plenty of scoffers out there willing to tell me I have no musicality or I cant walk or I cant lead, that Im a beginner and completely clueless, that my partners dont mean the complements they give me or that they are just as ignorant as I am.
